In January 2020 the Council was awarded additional Rough Sleeper Initiative Funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) to continue to work towards ending Rough Sleeping. As the MHCLG want the Council to deliver at pace the funding is ring fenced and must be used in 20/21.
Rough sleeping attracts a significant level of concern and scrutiny both nationally and locally. The main areas of demand relating to this specific group will be from Felixstowe and Lowestoft but the service will cover the whole of East Suffolk
You will be part of the Housing Needs Team who are responsible for delivering advice and assistance to people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness. You will be responsible for a distinct caseload of applicants who are identified as sleeping rough or who are at risk of becoming street homeless. Cases will be identified either through Outreach Services or through the Rough Sleeper Coordinator. Your duties will include assessing and verifying housing applications, undertaking homelessness casework, and providing housing advice and information at the first point of contact.
You will be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal, interviewing, and written communication skills along with a working knowledge of Part 6 and Part 7 of the Housing Act 1996. You will also have excellent organisation and negotiation skills as well as the ability to remain calm when challenged on decisions.
