On 1 April 2019, we will become East Suffolk Council – a new ‘super district’ authority, replacing Suffolk Coastal and Waveney. It will be the largest district council in the country, providing high-quality services to a quarter of a million people across east Suffolk. Our councils are an exciting place to work and a great place to make a real difference to people’s lives, delivering vital services to those who need them most.

The Planning Service is central to the future success of the new district, helping to shape and deliver the prosperity of the area, while keeping it a special and desirable place in which to live, work and visit. To support this ambition, the Planning team needs to grow.

The East Suffolk Councils are delivering nationally significant infrastructure projects in the energy sector, positively responding to the government’s growth agenda by allocating and planning for significant residential development across the district and delivering significant employment opportunities. The work will include supporting the regeneration of Lowestoft as well as promoting and enhancing the Port of Felixstowe. Growth on this scale needs to be sensitively managed to ensure it is delivered with the best possible infrastructure in place and impacts fully mitigated.

Additionally, a significant proportion of the districts sit within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, along a stunning coastline of pristine beaches and beautiful estuaries. The districts include a wealth of internationally important estuarine and healthland Special Protection Areas and Ramsar sites, including RSPB Minsmere of ‘Springwatch’ fame. We also share a very close relationship with the Broads National Park on our northern boundary, working together to preserve the unique importance of this National Park. Lowestoft is within a short distance of the historic university city of Norwich, with Melton close to Ipswich and an hour’s train journey to London. No other districts in the country are able to offer the quality of life, variety and breadth of planning opportunities and development, in what will be the country’s largest and newest district planning authority.

Working as the professional planning lead officer and advisor, you will project manage and consider a variety of development proposals, including the negotiation of Section 106 agreements. This will also include providing detailed and collaborative pre application advice, Planning Committee presentations, and regular engagement with stakeholders and communities.

With a recognised and appropriate Planning qualification, and membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (or working towards membership), you will have considerable post-qualification planning experience, the ability to give sound advice, extensive knowledge of the planning system and planning law, experience of appeals and of leading on major planning applications. Strong influencing and negotiating skills, excellent problem solving skills and project management skills are vital for this role.

In return, we can offer great opportunities for training and development. We want you to stay with us for the long-term, so we will give you all the support we can to build a great career with our organisation. There is also a superb benefits package including flexible working options and purpose-built, brand-new office accommodation, as well as a generous leave entitlement, discount scheme, pension scheme and free car parking.

* plus essential car user allowance and professional fees.

Relocation package available, subject to terms.
