The responsibility of the Children and Young People’s Directorate (CYP) is to ensure the safety, wellbeing and learning of children and young people. To do so, we need to “make every intervention count” to create impact and bring about sustainable change for children, young people and their families where need is identified. We are determined to continuously improve our services by working in partnership to ensure that our work is high-quality and effective.

The Sensory and Communication Service give communication assistance to children with profound hearing impairment.

Working in partnership with the Teacher for the Deaf and classroom based teachers to support the child’s access of the curriculum, participation in learning activities and the life of the school by communicating between spoken English and British Sign Language or Signed Supported English, depending on the child’s communication preference.

We support the children to access their mainstream classes and provide alternative curriculums to meet their individual needs. We ensure their audiological needs are always met and develop ways to support the child, raising their self-esteem through attending specialist trips and extra-curricular activities. We are strong advocates for our children and work tirelessly to remove (or adapt) the barriers to their learning caused by their hearing loss.

You will:

  • provide pre-tutoring support as and when necessary to familiarise the child with the curriculum coverage and daily activities
  • use the agreed resources to draw out the key aspects of the learning in the classroom
  • take lesson notes if required to support the child’s understanding of what is being said and the child’s own record of the lessons
  • support the class teacher in evaluating the child’s learning outcomes
  • implement an individualised learning programme for the child with priority learning targets to include development in literacy, numeracy and social and emotional development
  • provide professional feedback to the Hearing Impaired Unit on the child’s progress, taking into account the assessment models used by the school to record the child’s progress.

This organisation positively encourages the use of technology to communicate and engage, but in this role you will need to operate across a wide and rural area, so you must either hold a full and current driving licence and have access to personal transport or meet the mobility requirements of the role through other reasonable and suitable means.
