Our Learning Disabilities and Autism service is undergoing significant transformation, striving for innovation and best practice, co-produced with our operational teams. As part of our change programme, we are recruiting Occupational Therapists in a bid to ensure that progression and digitalisation are at the heart of everything we do.

As the Occupational Therapist for the team, you will play a key role in helping us to rethink the way we work and deliver our services, achieving a greater focus on early intervention and independence. You will help us to create a robust culture where progression is the norm and digital solutions are consistently explored so that we enable people to live a healthy and independent life for as long as possible, exercising choice and control while ensuring safety, dignity and quality of life.

You will:

  • work with families, carers and providers using Signs of Safety - our new practice model - to carry out high-quality assessment of physical, psychological and environmental needs, in order to promote independence within our statutory obligations
  • promote positive behaviour support, assessment of skills and equipment / design profiling
  • champion the use of equipment and technology and support providers to think creatively
  • have a lead role in manual handling / housing adaptations and be proactive in reviewing people and their carers
  • promote independence, wellbeing and choice for customers
  • offer a service in line with the principles of Supporting Lives Connecting Communities (SLCC); promoting self-support, reablement and personalisation
  • carry out complex asset-based assessments / short term enablement plans (STEPS) and reviews
  • work with and support a wide range of people living in the community or recently discharged from hospital, whose situations are complex and challenging and who are vulnerable or disadvantaged in some way
  • act as a role model to unqualified staff, contributing to the implementation of further change required across the system (e.g. Health Integration and the Care Act)
  • act as supervisor to a small number of IWPs (Independent Wellbeing Practitioners) with the opportunity to supervise and support lower grade staff (qualified and unqualified)
  • support Occupational Therapy Students on fieldwork placement.

You can contribute to developing:

  • OT Apprenticeships
  • internal rotation between various teams within the council
  • rotation with health
  • simple assessment clinics and different ways of seeing customers
  • our work with other providers to share best ways of working.

  • a variety of case work with customers their families and carers in the community including reablement, moving and handling, complex equipment and adaptation needs
  • a Newly Qualified Occupational Therapy Programme joint with Social Workers and the opportunity to link with Newly Qualified staff in Health
  • a flexible working policy (predominately Monday - Friday office hours)
  • generous annual leave entitlement.

A relevant Occupational Therapy qualification and HCPC registration is essential. 

You will be required to travel frequently in rural areas, so you must hold a full valid driving licence and have access to personal transport.
