Our aims

We want South Norfolk and Broadland to be a place where all people thrive – physically, mentally, socially, spiritually and economically.

We aim to ensure we deliver good quality, cost effective services that meet the needs and aspirations of residents, service users, employees and visitors.

We will address the needs of people who have traditionally faced discrimination, or received less favourable treatment based on their age, disability, gender, gender identity, race and ethnicity, pregnancy and maternity, religion or belief, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership. These are known as protected characteristics.


Equality Act 2010

The Equality Act 2010 gave a formal requirement for all local authorities to comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED). This requires local authorities to consider all individuals when carrying out their day to day work.                   

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and other conduct prohibited by the Act
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
  • Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

Disability confident scheme

South Norfolk and Broadland District Council has been awarded the Disability Confident standard. We are committed to working with the Job Centre and the Department of Work and Pensions to support and promote disabled people in the workplace. This includes:

      • Ensuring our recruitment process is free from discrimination and available through a range of channels
      • Making job advertisements accessible including providing information in accessible formats if required
      • Offering an interview to those candidates who have a disability and meet the essential criteria for the role (detailed in the job description)
      • Making reasonable adjustments as required.

Armed Forces Covenant Silver Award

South Norfolk and Broadland District Council recognises the value serving personnel, reservists, veterans and military families bring to our organisation and are proud to have been awarded the Bronze Award from the Ministry of Defence’s Employer Recognition Scheme.

We seek to uphold the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant, of which we are a signatory, and are an armed forces-friendly organisation through our commitment to:

  • To support the employment of veterans and service leavers, where the essential criteria is met, through our Guaranteed Interview Scheme
  • Striving to support the employment of Service spouses and partners;
  • Endeavouring to offer a degree of flexibility in granting leave for Service spouses and partners before, during and after a partner’s deployment through our Annual Leave Policy
  • Seeking to support our employees who choose to be members of the Reserve forces, by giving them up to ten days leave for training and accommodating any mobilisation where possible
  • Seeking to understand more about our employees who are reservists, veterans, spouses or dependents
