Thurston Community College is a thriving, mixed comprehensive school, which boasts a strong sense of community, a supportive, caring ethos and a positive, friendly atmosphere. Thurston Community College offers an exciting, dynamic learning environment, where students display a positive attitude to learning and make good progress.
‘The behaviour of pupils is good. Pupils enjoy school and say that they feel well supported. Most groups of pupils, including the most able and those who are disadvantaged, now make strong progress from their starting points.’ (Ofsted, March 2018).
Staff work collaboratively, share a common sense of purpose and are relentless in the pursuit of outcomes of the highest quality for every student.
‘Staff morale is high and most staff are positive about the leadership and management of the school. This is because leaders have provided them with high-quality training and supported their development well at all levels.
Newly qualified and trainee teachers are passionate advocates of the school and its pupils. School leaders support them well and subject leaders develop their teaching skills through regular mentoring and effective support.’ (Ofsted, March 2018).
Thurston Community College enjoys a rural location with free parking and convenient transport links to Cambridge, Ipswich and London.
Mathematics is a thriving department with a proven track record of outstanding student achievement at GCSE and particularly at Advanced level. All Maths lessons are taught in specialist rooms at both the Thurston and the Beyton Campuses, equipped with the latest AV equipment. Mathematics is a popular subject in the Sixth Form with a large uptake at Advanced Level where courses in A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics are currently offered. Results in Mathematics are consistently high; last summer 68% of year 11 students achieved 9-4 and our A Level results placed us in the 10% of schools nationally with an ALPS grade 2. Notably, 57% of students achieved an A or A* in A Level Mathematics and 100% of students were awarded an A or A* in Further Mathematics.
We are seeking to appoint an inspiring, enthusiastic and vibrant Teacher of Mathematics to join our well established department. This post would be equally appropriate for an experienced or a Newly Qualified Teacher. You will be required to teach mathematics at KS3 and KS4, with the opportunity to teach A Level Mathematics available.
You will join an outstanding Mathematics Team, who pride themselves on their innovative approach to supporting every student to achieve their full potential.
You will benefit from entering a collaborative department who welcome forward thinking initiatives and are able to offer a new colleague advice, support and professional development opportunities in a friendly, positive and creative environment.
